New Zealand Festival

The New Zealand Festival is Aotearoa’s leading celebration of cutting-edge culture. For three weeks, once every two years, the Festival transforms the capital city into a thriving, place, abuzz with the best arts and artists from around the world. This year the Festival will open with Kupe, an epic event that will turn Wellington’s waterfront into a massive stage. It also includes A Waka Odyssey, a theatrical spectacle that will see a mass assembly of waka hourua (twin-hulled canoes) descend on the capital’s harbour. We can’t wait!

Volvo Ocean Race

Exciting sailing parties and harbour-side cheering is in order again as yachties from around the world stop off at Auckland as part of the iconic Volvo Ocean Race. New Zealand’s America’s Cup winning sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will be among the Volvo Ocean Race crews due to sail into the Waitemata Harbour in February 2018.

Matariki Festival, Nationwide

Join in the celebrations around the country to celebrate Matariki, our Maori New Year. Traditionally Matariki was celebrated by gathering with whanau (family) and reflecting on the past. Alongside traditional celebrations, festivities are held around the country that encourages the wider community to join in and understand this rich culture. Among the activities typically held are hangi and feasts, storytelling, dawn ceremonies and family days. Wherever you are, make sure to join the fun.

WOMAD

Another annual highlight in the New Zealand events calendar, this internationally-renowned festival brings together artists from around the world. WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) celebrates many forms of the three disciplines every year in New Plymouth. The three-day festival is a hit with all ages and stages, including families. Various camping options, food stalls and activities make this the place to be in March every year.
